Workshop on referencing

How is it? 10 people on this course and I'm the only one with a lap top!! saw a few with iphones prior to the start of the course...
I'm a constructivist.... will this course be.....?
PPt was used to deliver
Am I the only one that has trouble referencing correctly?
I don't think so.
Purpose of this session is:
working on helping students referencing from a students perspective so that by helping them we can make it easier for them.
source(were you got it from) - references ( dr walker argues this...) engagement with the sources... bring it into your writing... critical thinking stuff....
ref web sites
easibib
intext ref
ref list
paraphrasing
APA 6th edition system "that's what we use"
What are the issues? in a group discuss...in text ref quotes paraphrasing rules on what to do and not do... this is a new language to me and many students ... marking and what effect this has on me and them... secondary sources...... turn it in....give this to the students and get them to check their work with this prior to turning it in to you..... is there an app that does it? what about easibib? free is good.. decoding is needed...
how can we simplify this for the students? make sense..... staging of expectations.....but keep it correct ... guide books
Publication manual from the library... this has two sections on it... Has the library got videos on it?
APA has a web site
google it for examples

How much does ref mean to me and to other tutors? colleagues ?
Has any one made a video? have we checked you tube? teacher tube?

Using ref as part of an argument....
APA has a set of rules.... were are these?

e learning is low in this room.... many writing notes by hand
dumb room ... using the white board we copy.....
why do we have to do it? ref I'm talking about.....
Who are the experts you have read about? you need to respect them by ref...
Need a strategy so that over come decoding....
i.e. video and put up on teachertube.
Must be in context and in our domain
What steps do i take when pharaphasing some ones work
read it
think about it
read again
talk to someone about it
put aside
write about it... but don't look at it!
Do an activity on pharaphrasing ... see notes for example .

How is it?
Rather than me make a video, the students did, with an oral overview.

questions asked today

How is it?

Today started off with a bit if a debrief about how the vacum bagging went on the cockpit.
A few problems occured with the seal around the transom, with the flange width not being wide enough. Also some resin had migrated on to the loweer part under the masking tape.
I retried 3 times to get a good seal but....

Question 1.
Is the center line on the deck correct? No I said check it. We now have a saw cut in the transom at the center l;ine, projected up off the concrete floor. A straight edge was placed on the C.L. at the F.P. and a string line drawn between the two. The C.L. was projectend onto the cockpit sole and drawn in. ( later I asked if the C.L. was also project down onto the cabin top,,,,, ops, next time... )
A New one is now drawn on the bridgedeck B/head onto a masking tape.

Question 2. The CAD drawing we now have what does this show us?
Adrian has done a dwg of the laminate detail about the mast base and the bridge deck b/head for the companionway hatch. Plate details have been placed onto pattern materials and the plate diamond sawed to suit. Plate approx 8 mm thick so need 2x to get 16 mm thick. Then glued up get thickness. Carbon top and bottom tomorrow.

Question 3.
I asked if they the students could plan how they are going to finish vacuuming the rest of the laminate on the remaining floors and frames?

We talked over some of the lessons learnt from the last one and what and how they would approach the task this time. The correct responses in most cases started to come out.
We did a talking stick round and all expressed some good stuff on how things are going for them at present.
The manofold system that vaugh set up seems to be working fine so far. The hoses off this may be a little stiff, and so the lead into the bag can have pressure onto it at times. Solved with the aid of a few cramps and some masking tape. Three floors/frames completed today and they are looking good. Great work team. I'll have to peel back some of the bagging, as we want to glue in the fore and afters tomorrow. Also the b/head needs to be marked onto the hull.
Seabass is working on the centercase, Rob has asked if work can be delayed for a day or two, as he might have a board to suit. We might then have to adjust the case to suit. Yep no problem recons Seabass....

Question 4. Can chris do another lot of sketches that explain what needs to be done tomorrow... students have voluntered to come in on their days off to help catch up.

Gantt charts to plan a project

How is it?

There are several free downloadable Gannt chart generating programmes available through
Web 2.0
I have used OpenProj and created a Gantt chart.
Another is... this is for Mac.
I couldn't find one that was both free and yet allow collaboration to occur and be stored in the cloud.. soon I hope someone will make one available.

Thought on a deck

How is it?
I asked the team to break out into smaller groups and take time out to think about what the deck construction method might look like?
This photo was taken by a student during the process of laying out the grid that takes the deck temporary structure.

For me, to see these thoughts was important, so I asked the team to sketch onto cardboard what's in their minds eye. Then explain these sketches to the larger group. SMV = Student Manufactured Video.

Sebastien had an idea and thought he might express this using Sketch-up. So off to the CAD Lab he took himself and one other student, coming back with his concept that he then printed off.

Young Taes group had many great sketches and he explains a few of these. He has a very soft voice. SMV.

The team have come up with many thoughts and solutions. Much critical thought was used.
When asked, one of the students said "the hardest part was the thinking". You might notice Young Tae using his electronic dictionary. LMV.

Living Curriculium :

Curiosity/Inquiry

Learners and teachers develop meaning through asking and answering questions
• Teachers become facilitators and co-learners
• Learners become investigators, seekers, problem-solvers

After all, what is the use of adopting loftier goals for yourself and your students if you continue to use multiple-choice tests that seek the “right” answer, capturing only the lower-level knowledge that is easiest to measure? Rather than relying on a single assessment method, instructors who adopt authentic learning methods must analyze multiple forms of evidence to measure student performance, including observations of student engagement and artifacts produced in the process of completing tasks.

Internal skin Shaw 550

How is it?

Glued the topside foam in location and sealed the strip planked cedar with epoxy.

Sanded the sealer coat the next day with 60 grit to denib and vacuumed the hull clear of dust.

Marked out the laminate onto the hull about the centerline.
The first drop is wetted out in location.

Cut the glass and rolled onto tubes ready to layout.

The peel ply is being applied. The air needs to be worked out.

Nose cone Shaw 550

How is it?

Got a bit of info about the shape of the nose cone at the bow. Goran lofted out the frd section and after a few sketching session he created a female mould from MDF in which the foam would be placed. Strips of foam were cut and the pieces were edge glued. A few extra layers of tape were needed to help hold the strips.

On demoulding from the jig the nose cone had a slight hollow in it. Also the gaps on the frd face were extreme. Glue was also too thick and not cleaned off when wet.
Not a good thing. So a rethink was called for and another MDF frame was added to the mould.
The strips were tapered this time to help with the gaps on the frd face. Looking good now.
Less glue was also used and any excess was cleaned off the after face. All alot neater.
Goran started to fit in situ but ran out of time.
Jade and Chris fitted the nose cone on Thursday and a few modification later it fitted.

Applying the glue.

Foam

How is it team?

Find a link to a site on the foam we will be using during the build of the Shaw 550.

Have a read and get back to me with any questions.
I suggest we use Buzz for this.

A reflection on last semesters teaching/learning

How is it?

Sometimes sitting next to Vickel has its down fall... but not of bbgtvgrgften...
He asked/told/invited me to do a video reflection on...
  • What was the major difference from the past way/ways of teaching
  • What tools did I use and how and what effect these had on my/their teaching/learning
  • Attitudinal changes from me and or the students
  • Changes in my teaching/learning style
  • How was this/my approach affective? If it was at all?
So can this be done on a video? What might this look like?
I find talking to a person on a topic easy, but talking to myself on a topic, at times difficult.
Vickel has mensioned to me that he is prepared to video me with a hand held camera. This also I find un-natural for me , but I'm prepared to give it a go.
Having used some of the Web 2.0 tools of late both in my own development and in the class room, has changed the way I teach/learn
